AI in Graphic Design Process - Ideation
Brainstorming
The initial phase of brainstorming led me to ChatGPT. By feeding the AI the entire organized brief, it managed to produce some intriguing concepts, such as rocket launch and the planet infusion idea. While these served as an excellent foundation, the AI's capacity to switch rapidly between varied concepts - a critical facet of brainstorming - was found wanting. Nevertheless, I found value in these AI-generated ideas, using them as foundational stones for further development.
Mindmapping
For the mind mapping phase, I turned to an AI tool named MyMap (MyMap.ai, 2023), which promotes AI-driven conversations in a 2D map format with branching capabilities. But instead of fluidly branching from my inputs, it offered verbose, AI-generated points. This produced a cluttered mental landscape, prompting a return to the time-tested method of manual mind mapping. Additionally they offer complete mindmap generation based on input keyword but these results were more or less the same, without offering any interaction at all.
Moodboarding
The process of creating moodboards began after the development of three potential design territories. These territories, named "Planetary Munch", "AstroReflection", and "Interstellar Type", were each conceptually distinct and served as different paths that the design could follow. Each territory represented a unique fusion of the space-themed food concept central to the brief and was given its name by ChatGPT based on my inputted description of it.
Guided by these territories, I ventured into the realm of Adobe Firefly. This AI tool translated textual visions into visual wonders, producing uniquely nuanced imagery. Yet, for some aspects of the moodboard, the rich tapestry of traditional browsing remained unmatched.
Sketching
The sketching phase took a digital turn with Dreamstudio and Fotor.
Marketed as image-to-image generators, these platforms attempted to
convert hand-drawn sketches into digital designs. However, the promise
and reality diverged. Minor pencil details became glaring flaws in the
digital realm. Even after various tweaks, the results were far from
optimal, necessitating a return to the trusted manual digitization
process.
Presentation and 'Client' Meeting
In anticipation of the 'client' presentation, Gamma and Tome, both AI
platforms, were employed. Despite the hope they kindled, their
auto-generated presentations demanded significant manual overhauls.
The simulated 'client' interaction, aided by Bing, was an insightful, albeit humorous, exercise. While the feedback began constructively, Bing's eventual outburst became a light-hearted reminder of the unpredictable nature of AI.
