Reflecting on My AI in Graphic Design Dissertation Journey

After several months of intense research, experimentation, and writing, I have finally completed my dissertation exploring the role of AI in graphic design, and as I reflect on this enormous undertaking, I'm filled with a mix of accomplishment, fascination, and lingering questions.

Crafting this paper was an exercise in careful planning. Comprehensively documenting my experimental design process using AI tools across client briefings, research, ideation, design development, and evaluation provided insights into AI's potential and limitations. The months of exploration underscored the importance of transparency in detailing my methodical approach.

Beyond the practical testing, this research deepened my perspective on AI's transformative impact on graphic design. The literature review and case studies highlighted the expansive possibilities AI offers in augmenting human creativity and workflows and seeing how companies are already integrating these tools opened my eyes to the imminent changes underway in the industry.

However, the discussions around ethics, biases, privacy, and job displacement also underlined the responsible oversight required in using AI and as my research emphasized that realizing AI's potential necessitates balancing innovation with ethics.

Conducting this research strengthened my view that AI should empower designers, not replace us. The limitations I encountered validated that human creativity remains irreplaceable and AI's role is to complement our skills, not substitute them. This insight will guide how I integrate AI in my future design work.

While I gained valuable hands-on experience with AI graphic tools, I also encountered substantial frustrations. The inconsistencies, glitches, and misfires reminded me that despite the hype, these technologies remain imperfect. Moving forward, I'll approach new tools with an open yet critical mindset.

Looking back, my dissertation journey was both enlightening and challenging. It gave me a deep appreciation for the complexities and potentials of integrating AI into graphic design. As the industry evolves, one thing remains clear to me: while AI will undoubtedly play an increasing role in shaping design, the human touch, creativity, and ethics will always be paramount. I'm excited to embark on the next chapter of my career, carrying forward these lessons and insights.

Brainstorming The initial phase of brainstorming led me to ChatGPT. By feeding the AI the entire organized brief, it managed to produce some intriguing concepts, such as rocket launch and the planet infusion idea. While these served as an excellent foundation, the AI's capacity to switch rapidly between varied concepts - a critical facet of brainstorming - was found wanting.
