AI in Graphic Design Process - Writing Process

Using ChatGPT as a writing assistant

Writing my dissertation was not just an exploration of AI's role in graphic design; it was also an experiment in integrating AI into the academic writing process. At the forefront of this integration was ChatGPT. From the outset, it became evident that working with ChatGPT was going to be a unique experience.

Typically, my interaction with ChatGPT began by posing questions before sharing my written content. If ChatGPT identified gaps or areas that could be fleshed out, I would ask it to pose specific questions to me. This approach was transformative. Due to my ADHD, I often find it challenging to articulate my thoughts in writing, but when responding to pointed questions, the process felt more intuitive and direct.

But ChatGPT wasn't just about aiding the writing process. As I delved deeper into the writing, the AI tool refined the language, ensuring clarity and precision. It acted as a sounding board, allowing me to gauge the strength of my arguments, and provided feedback for iterative refinement. In sections that needed further context or depth, ChatGPT offered insights based on the information I provided.

However, it's essential to understand the nature of AI suggestions. ChatGPT, with its propensity to offer continuous adjustments, taught me the art of discernment. It's crucial to know when to accept a suggestion and when to stick to one's original thought. Over time, my prompts to ChatGPT became more refined, but as the scope of my project expanded, I also found myself sometimes taking shortcuts in posing these prompts and getting worse results.

One of the key takeaways from this collaboration was understanding the boundaries of AI's role. While ChatGPT provided feedback and refinement based on my inputs, it didn't introduce entirely new concepts. This ensured the authenticity of my work remained intact. Additionally, while ChatGPT proved invaluable in refining content, it wasn't my go-to for in-depth research, which remained a personal endeavor.

But all in all, the collaboration with ChatGPT reshaped my approach to academic writing. While the core of my dissertation— the analysis, interpretations, and conclusions—remains a testament to my insights and research, ChatGPT's influence in refining the content was undeniable. It was a journey of combining human intuition with AI precision, culminating in a work that reflected both authenticity and clarity.

Brainstorming The initial phase of brainstorming led me to ChatGPT. By feeding the AI the entire organized brief, it managed to produce some intriguing concepts, such as rocket launch and the planet infusion idea. While these served as an excellent foundation, the AI's capacity to switch rapidly between varied concepts - a critical facet of brainstorming - was found wanting.
