AI in Graphic Design Process - Research

AI-Powered research

Initiating the research with ChatGPT to pinpoint key areas, I found that the results mainly mirrored insights I'd already gleaned during the initial client communication—covering company background, target audience, competitors, and client-requested design trends.

Having said that, Albus, a ChatGPT-powered tool, proved more useful as it generated topics related to the provided input; for instance, when given the term 'space food', it produced insights on consumption patterns and nutritional requirements. While it couldn't fully replace manual research, it did highlight additional areas of inquiry.

While exploring AI tools for business research, I noticed a dominance of data-driven applications tailored more for marketing teams, especially given their steep subscription costs. Experimenting with online browsing tools like Bing (Microsoft, 2023) and the WebPilot plugin (WebPilot Inc., 2023) for ChatGPT, the findings were often broad and lacked depth, especially concerning competitor strategies.

The AI landscape shone brighter when navigating the realm of target audience research. While numerous SEO-driven tools beckoned, their reliance on the ChatGPT 3.5 API steered me towards directly harnessing ChatGPT. Crafting several AI-conjured personas, I unearthed intricate profiles detailing preferences, behaviours, and potential barriers or motivators. These digital personas lent valuable insights, enriching the design blueprint.

AI's prowess dimmed when venturing into realms of design inspiration and trend analysis. In the absence of AI's capability to directly source and display web images, I found solace in trusted platforms like Pinterest and Behance. Experimental forays with generative tools like DALL·E 2 and Adobe Sensei, while intriguing, yielded unsatisfactory results without having a clear design vision yet.

In a surprising twist, Bing's image recognition feature emerged as an analytical tool, dissecting competitor packaging designs grounded in design principles. While its accuracy wasn't flawless, its analytical exposition, albeit devoid of human emotional nuance, added a layer of understanding to the research tapestry.
