AI in Graphic Design Process - Final Designs & Personal Reflection

Image
Reflecting on My AI in Graphic Design Dissertation Journey After several months of intense research, experimentation, and writing, I have finally completed my dissertation exploring the role of AI in graphic design, and as I reflect on this enormous undertaking, I'm filled with a mix of accomplishment, fascination, and lingering questions. Crafting this paper was an exercise in careful planning. Comprehensively documenting my experimental design process using AI tools across client briefings, research, ideation, design development, and evaluation provided insights into AI's potential and limitations. The months of exploration underscored the importance of transparency in detailing my methodical approach. Beyond the practical testing, this research deepened my perspective on AI's transformative impact on graphic design. The literature review and case studies highlighted the expansive possibilities AI offers in augmenting human creativity and workflows and seeing how compa...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Writing Process

Image
Using ChatGPT as a writing assistant Writing my dissertation was not just an exploration of AI's role in graphic design; it was also an experiment in integrating AI into the academic writing process. At the forefront of this integration was ChatGPT. From the outset, it became evident that working with ChatGPT was going to be a unique experience. Typically, my interaction with ChatGPT began by posing questions before sharing my written content. If ChatGPT identified gaps or areas that could be fleshed out, I would ask it to pose specific questions to me. This approach was transformative. Due to my ADHD, I often find it challenging to articulate my thoughts in writing, but when responding to pointed questions, the process felt more intuitive and direct. But ChatGPT wasn't just about aiding the writing process. As I delved deeper into the writing, the AI tool refined the language, ensuring clarity and precision. It acted as a sounding board, allowing me to gauge the strength of my...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Evaluation

Image
In my quest to harness AI for design evaluation, I ventured into using two notable tools: ABtesting and LogoMark. Here's a closer look at the intricacies of my experiences: ABTesting.AI ABtesting.ai is engineered to optimize websites using AI, aiming to enhance conversion rates through automated A/B testing. However, my initial interactions were less than smooth. The seemingly straightforward process of submitting a website for analysis turned into a challenge, with a persistent loading indicator that never seemed to resolve, regardless of which website I tried or how many attempts I made. Beyond this, another challenge loomed. To fully harness the platform's capabilities, users had to embed a custom code snippet into their Webflow projects. Unfortunately, given the limitations of the free Webflow version I was using, this would be an insurmountable obstacle. Additionally the signup page for the whole website was unavailable for several days I was trying to test this...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Finalisation and Delivery

Image
Preparing for Hand-In When it comes to wrapping up a design project, the final retouches and delivery phases are crucial. For this final project it meant preparing for final submission of all my finalised designs, its mockups, screen cast and all working files.  While AI tools showed promise, they couldn't match the precision required for layout creation and I crafted the brand guidelines manually in a reader-friendly horizontal format. They detail how brand assets, such as colours, fonts, and logos, should be used in various applications. Separately, to offer a tangible representation of how the designs would manifest in real-world settings, I created detailed mockups, which when coupled with a screencast of my website, provided a comprehensive visual narrative of the project's outcome.  A cornerstone of this project was its organization. From the outset, I was resolute about maintaining a structured approach. My final designs are neatly housed within descriptively la...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Presentation and Revision

Image
Human feedback When diving deep into the world of AI-driven design, I've been amazed at the capabilities of machines. But as I had dabbled with AI-generated presentations and even simulated client feedback in previous step of this graphic design process, they had their limitations and it became clear that genuine human feedback was irreplaceable, especially when refining design concepts. So, for this critical stage, I decided to go old school and I chose to gather direct feedback from real people that would into the imaginary company's target audience - millennials and Gen Z, aged between 18 and 35, of all genders - adventurous, open-minded, enjoy trying new experiences, and are health-conscious . My first step was to craft a questionnaire. With the help of ChatGPT, I generated few initial drafts. After some tweaks and combination, I had a 10-question survey in hand. It was a mix of open-ended queries, rating scales, and multiple-choice questions, all des...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Design Development - Website Design

Image
From AI Testing to Webflow In my preliminary research, I stumbled upon AI website generators like Framer and 10Web, both promising the allure of crafting full-fledged websites in mere minutes. But the reality was a tad disappointing. The outputs felt templated, lacking the dynamic flair I envisioned for CosmoBites. Moreover, the inability to choose a my own color palette or personalize the design to my satisfaction left me dissapointed. However the ability to quickly generate full website under a minute is definitely nothing to overlook and should be getting only better as the AI advances even further. Framer generated websites - prompt 'A product page for space food company Cosmobites' 10Web Here you first have to choose type of your business, then you are choosing theme and structure - barely any options. Before entering company name and description - for which they allow AI enhancement - pressumably through ChatGPT APi or smh. But yeah it describes based on the first t...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Design Development - Motion Graphics

Image
AI in its full power Starting with motion sequence I first wanted to try harnessing AI's power as much as possible. For this reason I have decided to first start trying storyboarding with Krock. It mimicked traditional techniques of storyboarding, using AI-generated images based on prompts to map out the story on a board next to each other. While this was nice and I didnt have to manually download and put images together, I felt it could benefit even more from intergrating some AI brainstorming, rather than having to lean on external tools.    After establishing storyboard I turned to Midjourney, where I started generating my initial still images. I was evaluating them based on the suitability for the advertisement, and its potential to be animated. Having those still images, I moved into Pika which allows for Image to Video along with prompt guidance. But despite its potential, transitions often glitched or failed altogether. Even repeating the same commands led to different...

AI in Graphic Design Process - Design Development - Social Media Design

Image
AI in Social Media When it comes to establishing a brand's digital footprint, social media is often the first port of call. For CosmoBites, I chose Instagram as our stage, aiming to design an all-encompassing profile that included everything from the main page and story highlights to individual posts and templates for future content. First I started exploring available AI tools - in this case AdCreative, a platform that promises a seamless journey in social media design. On paper, it looked perfect: a plethora of design options, easy customization, and quick results. But those promises didn't equal reality. Using this tool and trying to create some outputs from their several categories - Ad Packages, Ad Creatives or Social Creatives - All require input of picture, headline, punchline - and all of them gave me back the same results - template feel like look which looked horrible and completely lacking anything to do with the brand Cosmobites. All the templates felt to...
